If you spot cone-shaped bags dangling from your junipers or silky nests wrapping the ends of your pecan branches, you are looking at two of the most common tree pests in North Texas. Bagworms and webworms get confused constantly, but they are different insects that attack different trees and need different timing to control. Get the ID right and you can stop them with a spray, a pruning cut, or sometimes nothing at all.
Bagworms build spindle-shaped cases out of needles and silk and chew evergreens bare. Fall webworms spin loose gray tents over the tips of shade and fruit trees and feed inside them through late summer. Both look alarming. Neither usually kills a healthy tree on its own, but bagworms on a stressed juniper or arborvitae can, and heavy repeat webworm years wear a tree down over time.

How to tell bagworms from webworms at a glance
The fastest way to know what you are dealing with is to look at what the insect built and which tree it chose. Bagworms make a hard little bag, roughly one to two inches long, that looks like a hanging pinecone covered in bits of the host plant. That bag is the insect's home; the caterpillar pokes its head out to feed and drags the case with it. You find these on needled evergreens.
Fall webworms, by contrast, throw a loose, messy web of silk over the outside of a branch tip, and the caterpillars feed together inside that tent. The nest gets bigger and dirtier as the season goes on, filling with shed skins, chewed leaf fragments, and frass, which is the dry pellet-like waste caterpillars leave behind. You find these on broadleaf trees.
One more tell: bagworm damage is needles stripped down to bare twigs, often from the top of an evergreen downward. Webworm damage is skeletonized leaves inside a visible web, usually starting at the branch ends.

- Timing tell: bagworm bags are most obvious May through August; webworm tents show up mid- to late summer and into fall
Why bagworms are the bigger threat to evergreens
Bagworms deserve more respect than their small size suggests. A single female never leaves her bag; she lays 500 to 1,000 eggs inside it, and those eggs overwinter right there on your tree. When they hatch in late spring, the tiny caterpillars can balloon on silk threads to nearby plants, so one untreated juniper seeds the whole hedge the following year.
The real danger is that evergreens do not refoliate the way a broadleaf tree does. When a pecan loses leaves to webworms, it pushes new ones. When a juniper or arborvitae gets stripped of needles, those branches often stay brown and dead. Heavy bagworm feeding on an already drought-stressed evergreen in a hot Mesquite summer can kill whole sections or the entire plant.
Because the eggs survive winter inside last year's bags, handpicking in fall and winter is genuinely effective on a small shrub. Every bag you pull and bag up is up to a thousand fewer caterpillars next May.
When to treat, and when to leave it alone
Timing is everything with bagworms. The window for spraying is late spring into early summer, when caterpillars are small and actively feeding. A biological product based on Bacillus thuringiensis works well on young larvae and is easy on beneficial insects, but it loses effectiveness once the caterpillars mature and seal their bags. Spray too late and you are just coating closed bags that shrug it off.
Fall webworms are more forgiving. The nests look terrible, but the damage is mostly cosmetic on an established shade tree, and healthy trees tolerate it every year without lasting harm. On a large pecan, the highest nests are out of reach and not worth the risk of a wobbly ladder. The honest recommendation is often to tolerate them, prune out reachable nests, and save treatment for small or young trees where defoliation actually matters.
We never recommend burning webworm nests out of a tree. Fire scorches bark, kills living tissue, and has started plenty of unintended fires. It does far more harm to the tree than the caterpillars ever would.
- Best bagworm spray window: roughly mid-May through late June, while larvae are small
- Handpick bagworm cases October through April and seal them in the trash to remove overwintering eggs
- Prune or pole-pull reachable webworm nests; skip unreachable ones on tall trees
- Never burn nests; never torch a tree to kill caterpillars
What you can do yourself versus when to call a crew
Plenty of pest control is a homeowner job. On a shrub-sized juniper or a young tree, you can handpick bagworm cases, knock out low webworm tents with a hard spray from the hose, or prune off an infested branch tip and drop it in the trash. A handheld sprayer with Bt reaches the lower canopy fine.
The job changes when the infestation is high in a mature tree, when a tall screen of Italian cypress is turning brown from the top down, or when you would need to climb to reach the problem. Getting even coverage on a 30-foot evergreen takes equipment that builds pressure and reaches the crown, and working at height around a house is exactly the kind of task our crews are trained and insured for.
A condition-based assessment also catches what a spray cannot fix. If a juniper is thinning because of root stress, poor drainage in heavy clay, or a borer problem rather than bagworms, dumping insecticide on it wastes money and misses the real cause. Matching the treatment to the actual problem is the whole point of having a trained set of eyes on the tree.
Keeping pests from coming back year after year
The trees that shrug off pests are the ones kept in good health, and that starts below ground. In our heavy Blackland clay, deep but infrequent watering during summer drought keeps evergreens from going into the stress that makes bagworm damage permanent. A ring of mulch over the root zone, pulled back from the trunk, holds moisture and buffers soil temperature.
Good structure helps too. Thinning a dense, overcrowded canopy improves airflow and light penetration, which makes webworm tents easier to spot early and less comfortable for the caterpillars. Removing deadwood takes away the weak, easy targets pests prefer. This kind of routine care is cheaper over a decade than reacting to one crisis after another.
