Our stump grinding & removal process, step by step
1. Locate what's underground
We probe and mark sprinkler lines, landscape lighting, and any shallow utility before the wheel touches the stump. Near the front yard we hand-dig test spots where Oncor or gas service may cross.
2. Clear the collar
Soil, rock, and mulch around the stump dull carbide teeth and hide the root flare. We rake the base clean and expose the flare so the grinder reaches full depth cleanly.
3. Grind below grade
The wheel sweeps side to side, taking the stump four to eight inches under grade. For replanting in the same spot we go deeper to clear the main root mass.
4. Chase surface roots
Buttress roots that hump the lawn get ground flush along their run so you do not scalp them with a mower later. We follow them only as far as they break the surface.
5. Backfill and grade
Grindings settle over time, so we mound the backfill or haul the excess and bring in clean topsoil. The spot is raked level and ready for sod, seed, or a new tree.
