If your red oaks are browning from the edges in early summer or your live oaks are dropping veiny, discolored leaves, do not wait — and do not prune the healthy oaks nearby until you know.
Oak wilt is the most serious tree disease in Central and North Texas, and it is easy to confuse with summer drought stress in our clay soils. The tell is veinal necrosis on live oaks, leaves yellowing along the veins, and a rapid crown thinning that drought alone does not cause. Oaks share roots through grafts, so the fungus spreads underground tree to tree. Handling the wood wrong spreads it further. We diagnose, trench root grafts, and dispose of infected wood correctly.
Signs of oak wilt
- Red oaks turning brown from the leaf edges inward in spring/summer
- Live oaks dropping leaves with yellow or brown veins (veinal necrosis)
- A wave of decline moving tree to tree across the yard
- Fungal mats and cracked bark on dying red oaks
- Rapid, whole-canopy death over a single season
What’s included
Every oak wilt treatment & removal job we take in Mesquite covers the full scope in writing — no surprise add-ons, no half-finished site left behind:
- Field diagnosis separating oak wilt from drought
- Check for veinal necrosis and canopy dieback pattern
- Root-graft trenching to break underground spread
- Infected trees removed on a containment plan
- Diseased wood chipped or buried, never stored to cure
- Fresh oak cuts sealed in vector season
- Nearby oaks assessed for early symptoms
Diagnosis before anyone cuts
Not every browning oak has oak wilt — drought, hypoxylon, and root problems mimic it. We assess the pattern of decline, the leaf symptoms, and how it is moving before we call it. Getting the diagnosis right matters, because the response to oak wilt is different from the response to a thirsty tree. Where lab confirmation is warranted, we will say so.
- Symptom and spread-pattern assessment on-site
- Distinguishing oak wilt from drought and other decline
- Guidance on trenching to sever root-graft spread
- Referral for fungicide injection where a tree is a candidate
Stopping the spread — trenching, timing, and removal
Because oak wilt travels through connected roots, breaking those connections with a deep trench between infected and healthy oaks is a core control step. Removing a confirmed red oak promptly — and handling the wood correctly rather than stacking it against healthy trees — cuts off the beetle route. And timing all oak pruning outside the high-risk February-through-June window, with immediate wound painting, keeps you from creating the fresh wound that starts the next infection. See our tree trimming and pruning page for how we handle oak cuts.
Where a tree is too far gone, our tree removal crews take it down and dispose of the wood responsibly.
Our oak wilt treatment & removal process, step by step
1. Confirm the diagnosis
We inspect for the signatures of oak wilt: veinal necrosis on live oaks, sudden leaf drop, and a spreading pocket of declining oaks. Drought and chlorosis look different, and we will say so rather than condemn a tree that can be saved.
2. Map the spread
Live oaks graft roots with their neighbors, so the fungus moves underground through a connected stand. We map which oaks are linked and where the infection front is heading before cutting.
3. Trench the root grafts
A trench cut several feet deep between healthy and infected oaks severs the shared roots, closing the underground pathway. This is the single most effective step to stop the disease advancing to your other oaks.
4. Remove and handle wood
Infected trees come down, and the wood is chipped or buried promptly. We do not leave diseased oak logs to sit, since fungal mats on stored wood can produce spores that beetles carry to fresh wounds.
5. Protect the survivors
Any necessary cuts on remaining oaks are sealed immediately during vector season. We flag oaks showing early symptoms so you can weigh fungicide injection with an arborist before they decline.
What affects the price
We never quote a real tree job sight-unseen or bury you in fake “starting at” prices. Your written estimate is free and itemized. The main factors:
- Diagnosis scope and whether lab confirmation is used
- Trenching length and depth to sever root grafts
- Size and number of infected trees to remove
- Careful wood handling and disposal to limit spread
- Access and proximity to healthy oaks
- Follow-up monitoring of the surrounding oaks
