Fertilizer scattered on a lawn mostly feeds the grass and rarely reaches the tree roots that need it. Deep root fertilization solves that by putting the right nutrients and moisture down where the feeder roots actually live.

Why yard fertilizer misses the tree
A tree's feeding roots are not down by the taproot. They spread out in the top foot or so of soil, extending well past the branch tips, and they compete with turf grass for every drop of water and every bit of nitrogen. Broadcasting granular fertilizer on the lawn feeds the shallow, thirsty grass first.
On top of that, DFW clay compacts hard, especially under a lawn that gets mowed and walked on. Compacted soil has little air space, so roots struggle to breathe and nutrients bind up where roots cannot get them. The tree can be surrounded by fertilizer and still be starving.
How deep root fertilization works
Deep root fertilization uses a probe to inject a liquid nutrient solution under pressure into the root zone, typically several inches down, across a grid around the tree. That does two useful things at once.
First, it places a balanced blend of nutrients right at the feeder roots instead of on the lawn surface. Second, the injection itself fractures compacted soil and creates channels for air and water, which is often as valuable as the fertilizer. The result is a root zone that can actually take up what the tree needs to rebuild its canopy.

It will not fix a structural problem, cure a disease like oak wilt, or revive a tree that is already dead. Over-fertilizing a healthy tree can even do harm by pushing soft growth. Timing and pairing it with good watering
Fertilization works best paired with sound watering, because nutrients are useless to a tree that is too dry to take them up. In North Texas, deep and infrequent watering during the dry months, right at the drip line, does more good than frequent shallow sprinkling.
We generally time feeding to support the tree's growth cycles rather than at the peak of summer stress, and we combine it with mulching and a watering plan so the whole root zone stays functional through the hot months. The fertilizer is one piece of keeping a hardwood strong, not the whole answer.
It also matters that the blend is matched to the tree and the season. A stressed hardwood does not want a big shot of high-nitrogen fertilizer, which pushes soft, leafy growth the tree cannot support and can actually make a struggling tree worse. What a heat-stressed North Texas hardwood usually needs is a balanced feeding that supports root development and iron availability, since our alkaline clay soils frequently lock up iron and leave leaves yellowed between the veins. Reading which of those problems you have, nutrient deficiency, compaction, drought, or a mix, is the whole point of assessing before we inject, rather than applying the same recipe to every tree on the block.

Why feeding a heat-stressed tree can do more harm than good
The instinct to fertilize a struggling tree in July is usually the wrong move. A tree wilting in 100-degree heat is short on water, not nitrogen, and pushing high-nitrogen fertilizer forces tender new growth the roots cannot keep hydrated, deepening the stress.
